Robespierre - Die You Heathen, Die!

Backs to the wall, here comes ROBESPIERRE!! - 90%

AnvilRansu, March 27th, 2012

I think that Robespierre may be unknown to many metalheads here, but they shouldn't be. If I had to describe Robespierre's music in one sentence, it would be "occult punkish heavy metal with very raw vocals". Their music is kind of simple, but is still catchy and memorable. And last mentioned, but not least, it's so fucking heavy, especially when you compare them to other NWOBHM bands at the time.

The first side of this lp is their first demo from '83. The starting song, "Backs to the Wall", is maybe the most "punk" song on the lp. It starts with pounding metal riffs and continues with a fast tempo. The vocals are very wild here, especially the line "open up the gates of hell" and
the screams during the last chorus are bad ass. "Die You Heathen, Die" is in my opinion the best song on this album. Nice lyrics and a chorus with a raw and medieval atmosphere makes this title song one of the bests NWOBHM songs ever. "I Am a Cannibal" has funny lyrics and it's maybe the catchiest song on the album. It's also a perfect song when drinking beer and headbanging, haha. "March into Hell" is the heavy, doomy outro to the first demo. At first I thought that it's useless to be here, but after few listens it became a nice closing piece here.

The second side of the album is Robespierre's second demo. It starts with the title song of the band, "Robespierre". This is maybe my second favourite song from the album next to "Die you Heathen, Die". It has great lyrics and an especially nice chorus. Robespierre's music is maybe not the most original heavy metal, but it's done with feeling and it's such true metal. It's kind of the same thing as Venom had. I don't care how skilled the players are, the music is simple heavy metal songs and are the name of the game. The last four songs continue the same catchy, heavy, and raw metal as the others on this album. Every song is memorable here and I myself can't find any bad thing on the lp.

I'm recommending this to every fan of occult and raw heavy metal and fans of bands like Venom, the first Pagan Altar, Hell, Desolation Angels, etc. Check it out and after it has blown your mind, join Robespierre's fan page on Facebook and tell all your heavy metal friends about it, haha!
