Rise to the Sky - Every Day, a Funeral

Road to the heart of grief - 84%

gasmask_colostomy, July 25th, 2022

Rise To The Sky is the solo project of Chilean musician Sergio Gonzalez that seems to have developed into a fully-formed musical vision without much outside influence. Musically, traces of the Finnish, Norwegian, and British death doom and funeral doom scenes can be gleaned, certainly going by the lush melodies, regular slow tempos, and amorphous swirling mists of atmosphere, which call to mind Shape Of Despair, My Dying Bride, and The Fall Of Every Season. However, the key ingredient that the composer of Every Day, a Funeral brings to the table is emotion. Evident from the cover art and the clearly grieving song titles like ‘Just Say Goodbye’ and ‘Abandoned’, this fifth album from Rise To The Sky packs a sorrowful punch in the most deliberate of manners.

The roads to the heart of grief are various: longing growls and crushing slow riffs offset lingering melodies from guitar and violin, while more strings and some acoustic guitar and piano parts offer further texture to the widescreen struggle of each song’s progress. On the other hand, the title track packs some faster sections, even arriving at blastbeats during its 9 minute duration, the shorter ‘Sadness Cries in the Silent Sky’ also increasing the heaviness in opposition to the relaxed mood of cleaner playing elsewhere. Rather atypically, Every Day, a Funeral plays to a close in just 43 minutes, though that reflects the fact that each song has a fuller profile than the often sparse nature of funeral doom and tends to progress linearly in the fashion of classical compositions. Some may consider the heavy use of strings to the detriment of a gloomy atmosphere, yet the emotive melodies and powerful production maintain that hope is meant to be found within the despondent tempos.
