Great! - 84%

Anzuhan, November 9th, 2004

Revenant's first demo, titled Demo 1, is more like power/speed rather than heavy/power (it's a bit the same, but it doesn't matter). The production is rather good for a self-produced album, there's nothing wrong, really. If the album would have been released some 15 years earlier and as an album, people would call THIS the staple of power metal.

The demo starts with Control from Above which is a fast and gripping song and features good songwriting, just like Worst Enemy, fast and powerful, just like it should be -- with an astonishing intro riff!

Moment of Hate, an epic song, is not so fast as the others, and isn't really one of the best songs in the album, but has good songwriting and solid guitar work, and is very versatile. Perhaps Iron Maiden's Revelations reborn?-)

Concealed Truth -- RAA! This song itself great and a has a neat solo, but is a bit too repetitive. With Mind I Fly has a good chorus and is a solid speeder from the beginning to the end.

So mostly, the album builds up with a steady peace towards the end, every song getting better and better. But then -- oh yes -- then comes ASCENSION EARTH. I think it's Revenant's best song they've ever made, the chorus is so f-----g fantastic that it just CRUNCHES your spine. (The vocal lines -- which are according to the band vocalist, are taken from their guitarist's dream). The best song on the album, definitely.

The two closing song, Against the World and Witch Hunt are rather mediocre, though they make great closing tracks.

I'll say this: if these lads had been earlier, for some 15-20 years, they would have defined the whole power metal genre. Feel free to download the demo(s) from the bands site, for free!
