Knowing that this band had a member from Forgotten Woods (a band that I truly enjoy) I was really interested in listening to this demo and band. Unfortunately, this demo isn’t special at all.
In terms of sound, it sounds better than Forgotten Woods’ demos, but this isn’t much since F.W. demos are extremely raw in the sense of “it’ll make your ears bleed”, what’s bad, since there are lot of parts where you can notice the songs are good, but the sound is so fucking awful that you finally give up and stop listen to them. Anyway, this doesn’t happen with this Ravn demo (neither with the second one), which sounds like a rehearsal, but there are no interesting songs to find here.
The vocals don’t help either. They are just the typical scream with no variations, no aggression, nothing that make them special, but for those that hate Forgotten Woods because the vocals are sometimes similar to Varg’s vocals, this doesn’t happen here, so maybe that’s a plus for some people.
The songs are usually mid-tempo with some fast passages, relatively short and very simple. Maybe this is the only thing that resembles Forgotten Woods. However, simplicity is not effective here.
Maybe the best song is “Hvor Månen Rår”, which starts with a nice, dark riff and goes from mid-tempo to fast and from fast to mid-tempo and so on, but still, nothing that you haven’t heard before.
In conclusion, do not expect too much from this release and maybe you’ll not be as disappointed as me. After all, it’s a demo, so it’s an ok effort and it was recorded in 1994, so in context this isn’t that terrible.
