Rabid - Make Them Die Slowly

Sums up Everything Bad about the Goregrind Genre - 30%

thrashtildeath22, June 4th, 2009

As I'm sure you know, there have been a million and one goregrind, porngrind, cybergrind, etc. bands floating around over the past couple of years. It's gotten kind of popular in the underground, and needless to say, as with every genre that does, it's begun to outdo itself. There are just too many bands copying each other and ending up sounding exactly the same. Alot of people are really into it and can tell the difference between all of the different acts. I, however, am not, and thus have no tolerance for the generic, mass-produced crap that comes out of it.

And that's exactly what this Rabid demo is. Their music is simply a half-assed Impetigo rip-off. And unfortunately, they are pretty much a disgrace to that great, pioneering grind group.

The first five or six tracks on this demo are actually fairly enjoyable for what they are: simple goregrind. There are pummeling blast-beats, some cool grooves, and a handful of interesting mid-paced areas. However, by track seven ("Stay out of my Grave"), I realized that they were simply using the same four or five good riffs that they had over... and over... and over again. Everything else up through track ten is basically just boring and generic grind that you've probably heard a million times before, and by better bands.

By track 11 ("Mmmm... Brains!), things really go south fast. It seems like at this point, they just ran completely out of ideas. Now, this is a grind record, and as such all of the songs are short, clocking in at an average of around 2 minutes. But here we are bombarded by a swarm of 10 second, sound-alike filler tracks and Mortician-esque songs; that is, 2 minute-long songs that are 1:45 horror movie soundbytes with 15 seconds of actual music (which just ends up being a riff they already used on the first half of the demo, anyway).

In fact, the best song on here is an Impetigo cover, and even at that, it feels half-baked and doesn't come close to doing justice to the original. The last track isn't bad either (surprisingly), but the out-of-time drumming and awkward ending make it not really even worth a download.

Now, I like some grind, and I can usually find something to like in a metal record. But this is just absolutely useless. There are masses of other bands all over the world doing the same thing at the same time with the same movie soundbytes. I get the feeling that these guys are a bunch of high-school kids who wanted to poke fun at the genre and/or tell they're friends that they are in a s00per-br00tal-crazeee death metal band.

Maybe if you're one of those people that's really into this sort of thing, you can find something to appreciate in it. If so, have at it. For those of you who aren't so much, don't make the same mistake I did (I understand they later became a thrash band, and sent them cash thinking I was going to get some of their later material. Whoops.).
