Pulmonary Abscess is not unknown within the Dutch underground. The band is active since 1989 and until 2001 they released three demos and a promo CD and in 2001 the self-financed full-length “The Greedy Illness” was recorded, which was released in 2002.
Musically, Pulmonary Abscess can be labelled as ‘hopelessly catchy Old School Death/Thrash Metal’ and a sheer joy to listen to.
Don’t expect your average nice-sounding, technically advanced band, don’t expect interesting songstructures either, don’t expect none of that crap. It’s just furious, pounding Metal. “The Greedy Illness” (recorded at the Ground Zero studio) has became just the perfect example for this.
The music of Plumonary Abscess keeps hauting through your brain, which is the direct merit of the very heavy riffs of guitarists Edwin and Iwan, the pounding drums of Bert and the low, distinct vocals of Marijn. Your head wants to go up and down almost automatically, the catchy chords ringing in your inner ear like there’s no tomorrow.
On top of that come the twin guitar parts (“This Is The World”, “Mortal Sun”) and the (twin) solos (“McDriveby”, “Mortal Sun”) which came straight out of the Eighties. Sometimes I hear some Gorefest- and Boltthrower-like riffs, whereas the closing track “The End” has an ultrafast Hardcore riff.
The band shows some serious signs of variety within their furious music without compromising and that’s the way we like it. Therefore, “The Greedy Illness” is a must have for those still addicted to gutwrenching, sick Death/Thrash Metal from the early Nineties.
I’m inclined to give 5 points extra on top of the 80 points because of the ultra-nasty guitarsound. It’s something I don’t normally do, but Edwin and Iwan crush most of their US nu-Death-counterparts without any effort. Cool!
