First thing that comes to mind after hearing Lithuanian death thrashers Posterity is, "How are these guys not signed to a label?!". Formed in 2007 and after releasing 2010's, The Price Of Greed, this young band was recently submitted to Deathportal for review, and I'm sure glad they were! Since receiving the tip and after downloading the album, I have not been able to stop listening seven song slab of straight-up in your face death metal. After doing a little research, I was surprised to learn Posterity is a two-man effort. I was unable to find much more information about the band other than I saw on a forum that someone mentioned they had just recently broken up, which I certainly hope is not the case. Posterity are a special talent, and it is unfortunate they are not more widely recognized.
The Price Of Greed showcases the band's talents as songwriters, musicians and boasts a wonderful production quality. This album is all about riffs. The guitar work really stands out as the record's driving force. The Price Of Greed cuts to the chase immediately upon the first song, "Choices Made". Strife of pounding death metal with catchy riffs, technically tight drumming/bass and superb death vocals, reminiscent of a Once Upon The Cross era Glen Benton, instantly hook the listener in the album's choke hold. For myself, Posterity are reminiscent of a young Decapitated. This is a strong opening track to lay the foundation and set the tone for the rest of the album. It's solos during the song's midsection are masterfully executed, highlighting the band's technical prowess. This is quality death metal, a fact that Posterity makes evident right out of the gate.
The follow-up and title track, "The Price Of Greed", only reinforces the already set sonic standard set by the first. In fact, it may be the album's defining composition. Once again, the guitar riffs really define this song, and it's catchy groove lends nicely to those with heads to bang. The album continues forth with each song as good as the last with "Contrived Terror", "Signs Of The Apocalypse", and "Endless Fight". "Born To Raise Hell" (not of the Motorhead fame) is another The Price Of Greed highlight featuring a melodic and creepy interlude among its angst driven, groove inspired metal massacre. All the songs on The Price Of Greed are fantastically written and performed and contribute to an overall powerhouse of a death metal record. There is a tinge of thrash throughout the Posterity's approach. Fans of early 90's death bands will appreciate The Price Of Greed as a new and refreshing force as well as fans of such bands like, Blood Red Throne, Aeon, and Decapitated.
For a band with these abilities and an album of such magnitude, it is amazing, and also quite unfortunate, that Posterity remained under the radar for all these years. Not only do they deserve much wider recognition and appreciation, but it is sadly the true fans of the genre and extreme music alike that have no idea what they're missing. Posterity may be just one of thousands of musicians the world has been missing out on and no doubt, they are one of the best. I highly encourage everyone to give them a listen and further enhance your collections with The Price Of Greed. I, again, am very thankful they were brought to my attention and hold it in high regard. It will remain a true gem from a special band that will be returned to for many years to come.
***Note: 5/25/13 - It as been brought to my attention that unfortunately Posterity did break up and are no more. The reason The Price Of Greed never got a wider recognition was due to a lack of funding for it's release.
