Pit Lord - Grilling on Adrenaline

Flame fucking grilled - 83%

Demon Fang, December 1st, 2020

Pit Lord’s next slab of meat comes in the form of Grilling on Adrenaline. From there, it seems to continue where Meat Demons left off – sendups of classic death metal titles but with meat puns, presented with some meat-related samples and chunky riffing. But there’s a few things that give Grilling on Adrenaline a real leg up from Meat Demons. Namely, with some added variety to their repertoire of spices. But more importantly, the higher quality of spices that are being added to the higher quality cut of meat from a more well-known, more reputable butcher than the one they got their cuts from before.

It’s not just this overly groovy riff and this fast groovy riff like before. The faster riffs have a slight lean towards 90s death metal, as you’ll find in “Extra Sloppy” – quite befitting of a song about sloppy Joes. Some of them are even tremolo picked, which makes sense for the Darkthrone sendup “A Glaze in the Northern Sky”. But even the groovier stuff has more to them. “Grilling on Adrenaline” has that unmistakable Dying Fetus swagger, while “Blessed are the Thicc” is basically Pit Lord carving out this thick, juicy cut of rib eye steak. Then you just kind of get a bit of everything with the closer, “Beelzebarbecue” – some grooves, some death metal riffing, and then some light tremolos to accentuate the rest ever so carefully. By the end, you end up with several succulent slices of this big and juicy steak.

At times, it can seem like Pit Lord lean a little hard on their influences, like with how “Grilling on Adrenaline” carries itself or the more black metal-inspired riffing on “A Glaze in the Northern Sky”. But they offer their own take with their own meatier take on these riffs, complemented by the chunky production. Besides, you dig into songs like “Blessed are the Thicc” – which is somehow not immediately reminiscent of Blessed are the Sick beyond the title – and “Extra Sloppy”, and it’s clear that they absolutely still have their own style. Kick off the latter with that clip from Billy Maddison, chuck on this thrashy riff and, even though it is about sloppy Joes, it’s still one of those songs that’s the aural equivalent of grilling some mouth-watering burgers on the barbecue. I guess you could say that with this song, you are grilling on adrenaline.

And that’s just it – Grilling on Adrenaline is good times on the grill with your mates. Between the dumb fun riffing and the various comedic samples (ranging from Billy Maddison to Aqua Teen Hunger Force), it’s an unapologetically fun slab of death metal with dashes of bigger bands to flavor their own cut of meat with.
