Pestuus - Profane Rites

Rumbling and icy black metal - 60%

oneyoudontknow, March 31st, 2011

Pestuus performance on their first – and so far only demo – Profane Rites combines the iciness (or rawness) of Angantyr’s Kampen Fortsætter together with a song-writing that is generally been found in the underground, but with a nice bass line in the background. The music is generally faster and consists of four elements:

Vocals, whose part is some sort of a muffled croaking
Guitars, whose play is actually quite good, especially as the riffs are not bad and are quite listenable
Bass, the counterpart to the rawness/noisiness of the other strings
Drums, whose play is there, but which suffers from the all too common flaws

Lamentations in Paradise & Denial of Jehovah [even though the latter is a bit too much influenced from some Darkthrone ideas) are pretty listenable, while the other ones lack a bit of potential or fascination. When it comes to the production, then it should be described as appropriate. What the band attempted to create has received enough power to convince in certain respects. Nevertheless, it is nothing but a first demo and also those twelve minutes are over pretty soon. Some nice ideas can be discovered and fans of raw black metal should give this band a try.
