Pestilence - Consvming Impvlse

A Beautiful Piece of Dutch Metal - 100%

ragarcia26, October 31st, 2018

I have to say that when I first heard this album a few years back, I wasn't too impressed with the vocals. Obviously, the musicianship on this record is fucking top notch. Although Patrick Mameli is a fucking wack job, the guy is an extremely gifted guitar player. I think as time grew on, MVD's vocals just really started to stick to me. It's as if the person on the cover yelling out in terror is an artistic representation of Van Drunen, and that's really rare when an album can perfectly describe the moods and feelings conveyed by a set of songs. Every single track just slams and runs you over like freight train, even the killer instrumental/weird solo guitar piece "Proliferous Souls."

To the vocals; as I said, I wasn't too fond of them when I first listened to Consuming Impulse. I was about 17 and was just starting to discover death metal in more depth, so it's safe to say I guess I had a preconceived notion of what death metal vocalists should sound like. The more I listened to tracks like "The Trauma" and "Echoes of Death," I just fell in love with the vocal delivery. As a lot of metal fans know, MVD has a super odd, yet satisfying and unique high picture screech that would be perfected later on in Asphyx (I personally don't think Pestilence would have been able to handle that incredible voice on their later works).

Patrick Mameli and Patrick Uterwijk are both fantastic guitar players. Of course, Mameli is himself a death metal guitar god (although the asshole claims to not listen to ANY forms of metal... BULLSHIT FUCK YOU!). The riffage on this record is really fucking great. To me, "The Trauma" is the perfect mix of death/thrash/doom metal. It's the perfect death metal song honestly. The riffs aren't super absurd, but that's just it; riffs don't have to be insane and overly complicated! The hook for "Out of the Body" is also really great. The drum roll into that song is just what everyone needs in their lives.

Marco Foddis is really a great drummer. The man knows how to hold the fort down, while driving everyone to the brink of insanity. I love his fucking tom rolls on this record. They compliment the opening of "Out of the Body" so well with what I'm guessing is a 10 inch tom all the way to the floor tom. What more can I say? Dude fucking jams on the drums and everyone knows it.

It wouldn't be too long after this record was made, and that the band would tour America with Carcass and Death that MVD would leave the band. Basically from what I've read in interviews with him, there were just tons tension between MVD and their buddy who helped on the tour versus the rest of the band. They basically didn't give too much of a fuck for MVD or his friend, even though they worked their asses off trying to make money to repay another friend who had loaned them like 10K USD or something like that. And the story goes that MVD went back to the Netherlands early and had some sort of argument with Mameli who accused him of being a drunk and a terrible on stage performer while on that tour. If you haven't seen footage of Pestilence from that tour, then you'll find that this was absolute HORSE SHIT. If you were also there, I'm sure you could attest to that.

I digress, the band seriously lost an instrumental part in the process. This album to me is the golden record of Pestilence. Everything is perfect. No one over powers each other EQ wise, and the band is just so goddamn tight. They are all very talented songwriters and performers in their own rights, they really are. If you haven't listened to this record yet and are reading reviews about it, just do yourself a favor and listen to it. This record will fucking change your life like it did mine.
