Peter Tägtgren is a man of many trades, perhaps most respected for his work in the melodic death metal band Hypocrisy, but Pain has always been an equally fascinating side project. Combining industrial metal with electronics and catchy rock elements, as well as appealing to a much bigger audience than his main projects. This single is nothing short of being one of the best songs Tägtgren has released under this name.
The track opens up with synths that are undoubtedly the moving element of the entire song, before kicking into a simple but interesting power chord progression that accompanies the keyboards well. The drums come crashing in, and they sound fairly decent for what I make out to be digital drums. The guitar tone is spot on and helps drive the expressive sci-fi aura Peter was going for with this song. The bass also complements every other instrument well and sounds great in the mix. The mix is very well done in general, with every instrument sounding full and interesting. The song is a bit produced which doesn't take away from anything, adding to the industrial sound and aesthetics.
The most powerful element of this song is the songwriting, as it flows seamlessly from chorus to chorus and ensnares the listener with catchy hooks and synths. The vocals and drumming are nothing special, none of the instruments are, but the writing is so imposing that they all come together and become cohesively interesting. The track doesn't drag on or get boring as every part is anticipating and infectious.
Not much else can be said about a singular track without rambling on. The song is very well written and I expected nothing less of someone with so many great projects under his belt. Definitely a worthwhile listen for any Pain fan, or just someone looking for some industrial metal. All one can do after hearing this track is pray that Peter releases a full length album like this.
