Unique blackened female fronted crossover thrash. - 82%

christophervinn, March 7th, 2011

Here we have a female fronted crossover three piece from Syracuse, NY. This is their first EP, and second self-distributed release. Omnicidal’s only other release is a ten song, much rougher, demo, which 3/5 songs off this also appear. The production isn’t the best on this but better than their demo and I believe the rawness does well with this. The female is merely just a singer, which means they have no bassist, but the riffs by guitarist Gabe keeps things interesting enough to hold your attention and is not that noticeable throughout listening.

There’s a few new things added to the new songs, and old songs. One thing is singer Shana’s vocal ranges. On the demo there are points of very weak, uninspired sounding vocals, and she is sounding more confident and comfortable. Her vocals range from a spoken type delivery to a very harsh lower pitched black metal screech, which actually fairs very well. Another new feature on this EP is guitarist’s Gabe’s contributions on the vocals, and the female and male duets make for interesting sounds to the ears. The riffs are fast paced thrashy, sometimes punky riffs, with cool little fills and with the occasional almost black metal tremolo riff thrown in here and there, which fairs well with those occasional harsh vocals. The drummer Justin for the most part keeps it basic with fast d-beats or one-two punk beats, and basic fast 4/4 16th note fills, but is strategically placed to make this sound pretty catchy.

Also for anyone who gets their hands on this, the lyrics are super political and actually very well thought out. Here’s some lines from, “Sausage Party In The Pit”

“Not a single woman in the pit/ I’m fucking sick of it/ the same old thing at every show/ these sausage parties have to go/ Enough about hardcore brotherhood/ I wanna talk about hardcore sisterhood/ Women stand the fuck up and dance/ get out here and represent/we need to learn to work together/ our isolation is keeping us down/ think about how different it would be/ if we had a more woman oriented scene”

If you’ve yet to hear the band I would definitely suggest it as I’ve yet to hear a blend of crossover with a female that sounds like this, especially with such a simple punk backbone with a lot of blackened thrash vibes to it. Definitely makes for an interesting listen, although nothing mind blowing.
