Oddity - Homicidal Nature

Impressive Debut - 85%

User16533, May 7th, 2007

This debut from such a young band clearly proves Oddity’s potential and love for death metal. Homicidal Nature is a pretty damn good album, especially considering the band’s age while recording this, but it does not offer anything new.

The songs are basically in the vain of Cannibal Corpse, built around standard death metal riffage and typical mid-paced beats to death metal blasts. One of the few but obvious flaws is that the guitars are not mastered in a high enough volume, especially in contrast to the ultra powerful bass. This is a shame since the riffs are actually good.

Another flaw that points itself out with time is the drumming. While the drummer is certainly capable of playing this sort of music, he lacks the actual capability to pull off some of the things that he attempts throughout Homicidal Nature. He makes several mistakes here and there which at first may be dismissed, but to the perfectionist can possibly lead to one questioning the drummer’s credibility. Overall, though, he does his job and maintains the integrity of the music well.

If there is something outstanding on this album, the award would be given to Tetes and Rage, the vocal department. The growls are harsh and piercing, just the way they should be for death metal of this sort. Every song is given its color in large part because of the vocals.

Oddity are definitely a talented band with a keen ear for playing good, structured death metal. The music is heavy and raw while still showcasing good musicianship.

Homicidal Nature is a very impressive start from an impressive band. Recommended for fans of old-school death metal.
