Oblation - Dead Unborn

Excellent Old School Death Metal (FFO Morbid Angel/Deicide) - 96%

Zod, October 19th, 2021

Oblation is a Texas death metal band I've only become aware of in recent years, and this appears to be the first track they released ... one of only 4 tracks recorded in the band's entire existence.

Right out of the gate the guitar riffs are very hooky despite being brutal. The drums are also very good and the blast beats are tight with the tempo, which was often a problem with 90s death metal bands before the advent of digital quantizing. The tones of every instrument are very good. The lead section is sufficient but not especially noteworthy. The vocals are good and appropriate but I think not as remarkable as the guitar and drum work.

It's not hard to see that this band's music could be compared to early Morbid Angel or maybe even Amon/Deicide. It really reminds me of why death metal got popular in the first place. This is played by real people, warts and all, and has a rawness to the tone and a memorability to all the sections that is often lacking in today's extreme metal.

If you're a fan of death metal, it's good to take a trip back down memory lane every so often and listen to some tracks from some of the obscure bands that were around when the genre was younger. For those times, I would definitely recommend this song.
