Sometimes, these lengthy tracks employ a lot of filler tricks to pad the length. You will get spoken word parts, long periods of silence, long fade ins/outs, and the like. Such is not the case here. This track is 45+ minutes of solid metal. So if you haven't got anything to do for a while, give it a spin.

Aside from a couple of short guitar strumming bits that seem to serve as breaks between movements, Slaves of the Vast Machine is fast paced death/black metal from end to end. To my ear, Obitus always manages pretty decent guitar harmonies and solid, machine-like drumming, so this track doesn't stand out in that respect. What does make it stand out is its sheer audacity. I can't think of anything quite like it, really. Maybe Warblade's Op. 41 from a couple of years ago (go check that one out too). The intensity starts right from the first chord and is maintained right until the final punctuated ending.

Slaves of the Vast Machine is never boring for its entire length. There are no spectacular solos, or solos of any kind really, but that means no repetitive wanking either. It is really a quite enjoyable ride. Highly recommended, especially for anyone who gets sucked in, but continually disappointed, by epic length songs that don't deliver. Obitus delivers.
