Northern Forest - A Long Winter

A Long Brazilian Winter - 41%

Fulgurius, May 4th, 2011

Ever heard about long Brazilian winters? No? So here you have a split of two Brazilian bands named "A Long Winter". Well, to be honest, I haven't experienced any "cold" feelings while listening to this tape, which is not strange for obvious reasons…

Northern Forest opens the split with two Vinterriket-influenced melancholic ambient tracks. The music is quite simple without any transcendental sparks or innovations, but you can't say that it's utterly bad. Neither can you say that it's really good. Actually anyone with a basic knowledge of music and a bit of imagination can make something like this if they would have gotten a synthesizer. The third track is black metal, and I have to say that comparing to black metal parts of "In der Unermeßlichkeit des Schnees" and "Alone in Winternacht" demos at least some imagination was used when composing the riffs, although the production and mixing are very poor.

The second part of the split is a bit more interesting. While Northern Forest's ambient is rather soft and melancholic, the music of Nix's Eyes can be called dark ambient. "Precipitatio" is perhaps the "darkest" track on this split, and it features some noise/industrial elements, while the other two tracks are somehow more laid-back and meditative with the use of undistorted guitar.
I can't say that this split is noticeable, but at least it can be listened to for a few times, mostly thanks to Nix's Eyes.
