This does not kick ass. In fact, it's quite mediocre. The first song really sets the tone for the next two - sort of a watered-down thrash not unlike a Testament, or maybe even a Blistered Earth. The vocals are kinda punkish, and the riffs are, while not bad, just not all that great either. And the greatest problem is that the songs just kinda go on at one speed the whole way through, and there aren't enough riffs. The first song is not bad, but then by the second, the formula's old.
Chaos Season, the song in question, is nearly 10 minutes long, and has enough riffs for three. It sounds at times like something taken from And Justice for All, with the little melodic parts sounding not unlike old OLD Slayer (back when Tormentor was 8 minutes long, i.e. pre-Show-no-Mercy). Sweet Revenge is more of the same - the fastest song here, but again, there are no really great riffs that totally own you from the getgo.
The Ballad is crap. Forget it. The last song, however, is excellent. Where was this before? Now this is THRASH!!! At times it sounds a bit very similar to some Raining Blood riffs, but hey - if you want to rip off something, may as well rip off something good, no? Also, the thing that really keeps it going is the subtle timing changes and the fact that they throw in about 12 or 13 riffs and a major solid thrash break in the middle too.
So pretty much, they should take the last song and run with it, because that one is a winner. The rest is kinda average (barring that ballad, which officially does not exist as far as I'm concerned) but pedestrian. But hey, it's free on mp3 so go get it.
