Mexican Black Metal has never been very famous. Nonetheless, I believe Nemesis Ocvlta is one of the finest BM bands in Mexico. This album is the proof, since it is a very weird (but well done) mix between classic BM, avant-garde BM, death, and thrash metal. Even the album's cover is quite uncommon for a BM band. The artwork is uncommon too, since they do not use goats, pentagrams or upside-down crosses, but images worked on a computer which principal colors are white, gray and blue.
Talking about the music itself, the band released two demos before The Complex. Through these previous recordings (which sound a lot like the Swedish BM) the band prepared itself for a new style, a new sound and a new concept. One of these demos (Renaissance) is included in The Complex first edition as four bonus tracks. The Complex's music was composed using not only minor scales, but pentatonic and major ones... The guitars perform an excellent counterpoint: while the leading one is playing a melodic riff, the other one a raw black metal riff, for example. The guitar solos are amazing and really well performed. The bass guitar does a great job, since its line is simple in order to support the rythm and the harmony. Felsen's vocals are amazing, extremely brutal, and hatefilled; he has a really wide vocal range and knows how to use it. The counterpoint that Felsen creates between the music and the vocals is a proof of his mastership.
The only two things that we could complain about are the drums and the intro. I believe the drums are not as good as the rest of the instruments and the intro gets boring after the first minute. These elements do not spoil the album though. We should know that The Complex is a masterpiece of the Mexican metal insofar as it took this band to play in Germany and Czech Republic... Something that only a few of the Mexican metal bands has done. Even though the band splitted-up, I really believe that The Complex is the cornerstone of the Mexican BM avant-garde.
The best songs are: Maiden in Winter, Crystalsomber, Schwarzersamen, and The Complex.
