Nekrofilth - Devil's Breath

Devil's Whiskey-Stained Breath - 85%

Daru_Jericho, November 8th, 2013

Nekrofilth is the bastardised side project of old school death metal maestros Nunslaughter guitarist Zack Rose formed in 2008. The debauched trio deal in a blood-stained fusion of death metal and crossover, weaving recklessness with brutality. ‘Devil’s Breath’ is their debut album following a bundle of releases here and there over their five years of existence.

From opener ‘Crave the Grave’, ‘Devil’s Breath’ hits hard with a bestial raw nature enshrined in the ferocity of grindcore and the punk spirit of thrash metal. Growls are raspy, guitar work traces crossover groove mangled with a hint of old school death metal sensibility. With tracks around the two minute mark, each song is like a bullet from an AK47.

The album explores a variety of tempos; ‘Death Rush’ explores mid-tempo punkified death metal rather than face melting extremity, ‘Deep Inside Disease’ sounds like a crusty Tribulation and ‘I’m a Degenerate’ rings like a homeless D.R.I. Lyrics are fairly straightforward to discern, dealing with gritty sex, urban drugs and a sleazy approach to death.

Given the attention similar energy acts such as Midnight, Children of Technology and Bludwulf have received over the past few years, it is safe to say that consumers of these aforementioned bands will certainly appreciate the tirelessness of ‘Devil’s Breath’, who are more keen to inject death metal into the vein of crossover.
