Necrosadist - In the Realm of Flesh

Raw Black Metal from Cyprus - 80%

Savvas, March 21st, 2007

Nercosadist is a two-member band coming from the island of Cyprus. They play old school raw black metal and they definitely know what they are talking about. No bullshitting here.

This is their first self-released debut/demo album, featuring 6 tracks with a total running time of 43 minutes. What I found out of the ordinary in here, is the fact that it’s split in two parts; “Side Flesh” containing the first five tracks, along with “Side Eternal” which includes the remaining one track entitled “In the Eternal Realm” composed by Dictator. Necrosadist is “exploring the nightmares of flesh and the chaos of physical existence”, hence the title “In the Realm of Flesh”, thus making the Demo a conceptual piece of work which is certainly not something you see every day.

The Demo has an overall haunting atmosphere. The album contains some typical in-your-face fast tremolo riffs while the addition of the noticeable distorted bass achieves a brutal-as-hell sound. The instrumentation would be an absolute zero without the remarkable drumming. What I loved the most is the violent use of the double-bass pedal as well as the drum licks here and there, it makes feel I want to bang my head on the wall. The addition of keyboards and bizarre sounds make the whole thing an incredible piece of work leading the listener to the extremes of thoughts. Not much I can say about the vocals or the lyrics. Dictator’s black metal singing style is definitely rare to find, however I must admit it would have been better without Adon’s additional vocals on the whole Demo.

First track on the Demo is a short Intro. Bizarre, odd, noisy, horrifying, are some of the words that come to my mind. Necrosadist make sure they give the listener a tight experience of what’s going to follow. Following is the best song on the Demo, “In the Realm of Flesh”. A lingering intro and then bam, super-fast drumming and guitars kick in. “Haunted by Unforgiving Memories” is the next track in here. I enjoyed this track as much as the previous one. The riffs are really well put together and the solo, which is creepy, adds to the whole image of what the Demo is about. Next, is the “Black Nercopolis” with fast drumming and a really nice riff in the beginning. Finishing off with the “Side Flesh” part is the “Ageless Temporal Flesh” which starts with a relatively slow tempo shifting quickly into a blast of instruments. I liked how most of the songs end with the addition of noises and sounds leading to the next one.

Moving on to the second part, “Side Eternal”, is composed of a 15 minute long funeral/ambient doom piece of work. Dictator is using aesthetical piano melodies together with the addition of bizarre sounds to create a cold and doomed atmosphere drifting the listener to the depths of thoughts. It’s as if you can picture a funeral taking place, it can really make someone shiver. Its morbid orchestration is well put together, which is three tracks united in one single piece. It gives you a feeling of desperate cry and someone falling into the void, truly inspiring.

Worth mentioning is the artwork. It’s seriously the best fucking artwork I’ve seen in a LONG time. The logo beats everything and I’m not kidding you. What I really hated though, it’s the average production. It’s a Demo I know, so I won’t go on and whine about it but it can get really annoying at times when the instruments are fucked up.

To sum up, this is one of the remarkable Cyprus releases so far. It’s brutal, full of hate, anger and wrath, a must for the fans of the old school genre out there. I’m honestly waiting for the full-length album and I really hope I won’t get disappointed. Stuff like that cannot pass unnoticeable. And remember…”YOU ARE NOTHING BUT FLESH”.
