Necrophecy is among the handful of melodic death metal bands currently in the Singaporean metal scene. The members of the band were all teenagers/young adults when they first started publishing music, but that didn't stop them from come flying forward like bats out of hell. Necrophecy's 2019 debut single, "Unshackled", perfectly exemplifies this with high-speed, bone-rattling melodic death metal. Their sophomore single, 2019's "Dying of the Light", favors a less extreme but equally majestic musical approach. I would recommend that fans of In Flames check out Necrophecy.

Starting off "Dying of the Light" is a brief sound effect that's reminiscent of the earth rumbling before the first verse enters. The first verse is initiated by clean electric guitars playing a melancholic riff that's around midtempo. The guitar is soon joined by some beats of the drums, and then some backing from the bass guitar. The vocals join in after those few initial instrumental measures. The vocals take a clean, melodic approach that stay in line with the melancholic riffing. This vocal style is maintained throughout the entirety of the song. The drums eventually start laying down a steady beat to build tension before the chorus section arrives.

The chorus showcases an aggressive side of the song when compared to the melancholic verse. The guitars switch from clean to distortion and utilize a mix of chugs & descending hammer-ons/pull-offs for the riffage. The guitars in this song are either in Drop C or C standard tuning (I'm putting my money on the former), so that gives the chugging some beef. The vocals get louder, and there are some backing vocals thrown in for harmonizing. The chorus upholds the midtempo pacing of the verse. The guitars in the chorus end off by letting a chord ring out before the second verse kicks in. The second verse and chorus follow an identical pattern of those that preceded them.

After the vocals in the second chorus end, a heartfelt guitar solo enters and beautifully accompanies the chorus riffing. Following the conclusion of the guitar solo is the beginning of the faster-paced bridge. In my opinion, the bridge is the highlight of "Dying of the Light". The riffing most definitely embodies that of melodic death metal. It's the driving death metal force in lieu of there not being any death growls. A few measures are solely given to the rhythm guitarist before the drums, bass guitar, and lead guitar kick in. The lead guitar brings forth another heartfelt solo. A third & final chorus comes after the bridge/guitar solo to wrap up the song.

For 5 1/2 minutes, there is a lot to behold in Necrophecy's 2019 single, "Dying of the Light". The songwriting as well as the production are solid. There's a strong sense of cohesion between each musical section. All of the instruments are fairly balanced in the mix. Since their inception in 2018, Necrophecy has belted out quality tunes with each having its own set of merits. Any metalhead who can appreciate a more emotional side of music will surely enjoy the offerings from this band.
