Mordant - Momento Mori

Evil. Death. Blood. Greed. - 90%

Danthrax_Nasty, August 7th, 2006

Momento Mori, Mordant's 2nd full length release is a fairly straight forward Black Thrashing, hate fueled, barage of driving rhythms, and aggressive riffs. Starting off with the title track, right away you get a great representation of what to expect. Sort of coupling a thrashy rhythm sensibilty, as far as rhythmic dynamics, and vocal patterns go, with a Black Metal reliance on the ultra aggressive in your face blasting feel. Nicely intermingled, this is a nice follow up to their previous ep.

The production is overly bare, seemingly like an album of the bands jaming sound. Aside from the leads dont expect much in the way of over dubs. Definitely a strong 80's Thrash/Speed Metal influence present in the riffing department in most areas. Straying from the overly technical, Mordant seem to rely on the power of the chord, and simply create great songs devoid of the unnecessary. Vocal wise, very similiar to their previous album, and overall great to these ears (definitely some stand out points due to great lyrics). This is a tight band, playing some morosely violent, and sinister music. Must mention also the stand out tone of the lead parts... fucking killer, and really helps the melodies stick into your brain like a poisoned spike drilled through your skull by a 30lbs sledge hammer.

Overall, I love these tunes, great stuff... Highly recommended.
