Alex Oquendo has served the vocal part in the legendary Colombian death metal band Masacre, and Morbid Macabre is his side project. After a successful debut, Alex is back with this 7" vinyl, paying homage to old-school bands such as the French Massacra and the Brazilians Sarcofago.
The tracks are straight-forward old-school death metal tunes, with slow, mid-tempo parts in the middle, deep and catchy rythm guitar and what appears to be programmed drums, serving as background for Oquendo's growls and harsh voice. Far from using modern technology to accomplish a clean sound, Morbid Macabre is in-your-face old school Death metal. So purists, beware!
'Domecq' is an anthem to the famous brandy Pedro Domecq, and the impression I got with the first ten seconds is that this one might as well be the equivalent of Sarcofago's classic 'Sex, Drink & Metal'. And when you think the song is about to end, then comes the deep, mid-tempo riff, short enough to take a breath and keep on headbanging with the final discharge.
'Muere Predicador' is a return to the old days of Masacre, with a hypnotic guitar riff somehow similar to old Napalm Death or Terrorizer, with the vicious lyrics Oquendo is known for, and the song final minute fades away with a marching, galloping riff with Alex's harsh, tortured screams.
Finally, the version of 'Black Vomit' does not offer anything new, and that's the great part, because it shows the listeners that the Brazilian band is a main influence for Oquendo's bestial attack,
All in all, this EP is a teaser of what I hope will be the next offering from this band, which unpolished production thus paying tribute to the good old days of the distinctive sound of the bands emerging from Medellin during the late 80's, a rough, dirty, raw sound best known as Metal Medallo.
