Moby Dick - Kegyetlen évek

Decent speedish thrash - 68%

UltraBoris, October 19th, 2002

So there really isn't anything overwhelmingly different about this album, other than the fact that this band was pretty much the only band in Hungary playing thrash at this point in time. This album is far more solid than some of their later efforts - it has some nice thrash breaks, some cool speed riffs, and even some of the really melodic solos that marked their demo era.

We start with "This is How this Century Is" - pretty much something you'd expect to hear on a more vicious Master of Puppets - maybe a bit of Kill 'em All and some Annihilator too, and also some Eastern influence... I hear a bit of Destruction, and a lot of Master (With a Loop Around the Neck/Talk of the Devil era) here, with a bit of late 80s Shah thrown in...

The best song, "Good Bye" is fucking vicious, especially with that main break. If you get Hungarian... this makes Megadeth "Liar" sound like a fucking love ballad, probably because it stays away from the overt insults and makes use of some totally biting criticism (approximate translation: "you are a total idiot, and are getting left behind - you don't even notice that this could be a problem!"). In fact, the entire lyric set is quite excellent. The imagery is at once clever and disturbing - imagine a really fucking disillusioned Martin Valkyer. Punk rock wishes it were this fucking pissed.

Highlighs also include the title track and the slower, more bludgeoning "You live or You Die" - though most everything is very competent. There is no overt fading, as even songs around the end, like "Thanks, I'm Fine" are quite nice. There is a really decent guitar tone (reminiscent a bit of Shah), and the riffs are generally cool. And if you understand Hungarian, you're in for a treat - or squirming from the imagery.

If ya find it, get it. That's all I gotta say.
