Mirror of Madness - Appelsiinijaffaa

Pretty good considering their age. - 85%

GoliathJT, April 13th, 2010

I originally heard about this band from my forum post about unusually young and old band members. After seeing their picture I was very skeptical about how good they really were, thinking their score of 85% was unworthy. Yet once again the Internet gets to punch me in the stomach and take my lunch money because MoM gets the praise they deserve (mostly).

I was surprised because I thought the guitars and bass would be talentless plucks like so many children around where I live. Things must be different in the far away land of Finland. A land where children can amount to something. Anyways, the song Appelsiinijaffaa has a very smooth beginning and sounds a lot like a Children of Bodom song. Think of MoM as a CoB Jr. This song has the same style as Cob in it's guitar, bass, and drums. Which isn't to say they're bad. This would be a great song based just on instruments, but Atte's vocals are a bit sub-par. Mind you, he was only around ten or eleven when he recorded this. His vocals are nowhere near bad, God no. They just sound a bit childish, which I guess should be expected. He sounds like a small Alexi Laiho. It's a very enjoyable song, but I feel the band could vastly improve if Atte got his vocals a bit deeper and smoother.

Next on the two-song disk is Nainen, another CoB-esque song. It starts out a slower, but louder than the previous track. The drums sounds almost exactly the same as the last track. The guitar and bass are still strong and very enjoyable. I also feel Atte's vocals are much better on this track. They don't have the raspy feel to them in Appel. Nainen has a nice guitar solo in the middle which shows Henrik's true potential as a guitarist. I have to say that this track is a bit better than Appel. It's more uppy and feels less childish, and has an awesome ending.

Overall, the CD is very good. Once you get over Atte's vocals being a bit high, it's a great example of why we keep kids around anyway. Get your hands on this any way you can. It's really a shame that MoM is on hold. If they got a big contract, we could finally get rid of Justin Bieber.
