Merit - Tempus Fugit

Great improvement - 70%

ruigeroeland, March 26th, 2008

Four years after releasing their debut album, Merit returns with “Tempus Fugit”. Apart from gaining four years of experience, the band also suffered from some lineup changes. Most notable change is off course new singer Carina who replaces Delia on vocals.

I must say, I like “Tempus Fugit” a lot more than “Totentanz”. The band has improved on every aspect, especially the song-writing department. They have written some great and catchy melodies. Another change is that it seems the Doom influence is mostly gone, the songs are quite a lot faster, more upbeat and more straightforward. It’s also apparent there is a lot more focus on the guitar, which has some nice leads throughout this release.

New vocalist Carina has a clean style of singing. Her voice has a higher pitch than their former vocalist and most importantly: her singing works a lot better with the music.

The production is comparable to their previous release, meaning it is okay but there is room for improvement.

I’m curious to see how the band develops in the future. They certainly show promise on this release, I’m eager to see if they can improve as much on their next release as they did between “Totentanz” and “Tempus Fugit”.
