In the 80's, thrash was the most dominant genre in metal music. The amount of bands seemed to be infinite, but it seemed like female fronted bands were uncommon. However, there was a ALL FEMALE thrash band named Meanstreak. They released their debut titled "Roadkill" in 1988, which I'll be reviewing here...
The title track kicks off the record, with some very fast speed metal/thrash riffs. Bettina France has a very melodic vocal style, which is suits the music surprisingly well. Her vocals are especially impressive on "Searching Forever", where she reaches some killer high notes! Guitarists Marlene and Rena are killer here, they are excellent riff writers. The riffs aren't overly flashy, but they work for this style of music. Martens Pace's bass is fairly audible, and drummer Diane Keyser is a very good drummer. Now that each band member's performances have been discussed, let's talk about some of the songs...
"Nostradamus" is the absolute highlight, the guitar harmonics in the intro are awesome, the guitar work here is the best on the record. The vocals are on point, this is a killer track. "It Seems To Me" is another highlight, vocals are also on point here, with some great guitar work. "The Congregation" is nearly 7 minutes, but it is amazing, the riffs are killer, the song's structure is very well crafted, and the lyrics are superb. Especially this particular line...
"They're the congregation - Send your money, save your soul!"
I'm not gonna give a million paragraph review here, so to describe this album in a few sentences, it is straight forward speed metal/power thrash. The record has strong songs, which have killer riffs, good bass lines, creative drumming, and most of all... AMAZING VOCALS! I highly recommend this album to fans of Znowhite, Detente, Sentinel Beast, Powermad, and Sacrilege. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
