I won’t lie to you, the British metal scene is frankly in the shitter. As a whole, we seem content to rely on the laurels of the old guard, rather than try and develop anything new. Lord knows what we’ll do when bands like Maiden or Priest stop making new music.
Anyway, onto the review. From looking at the band, it looks like they promise to be just another “deathcore” band that can be added to the next scenesters list of myspace friends, but don’t let looks fool you. Whilst there is clearly a -core influence in their music, their sound is far more rooted in the melodic death metal of old In Flames or At the Gates than bands such as Bring Me the Horizon.
The EP effectively contains two songs (the third track is a short instrumental piece) and the strongest is clearly “Big Dicks Kill Chicks”. The songs are very much focused on the melody side of things, avoiding the clichéd half a song breakdown or overuse of ‘more-br00tal-than-thou’ vocals. Each song contains only one breakdown kept to a tasteful length and is actually enjoyable to listen to.
However, the songs aren’t perfect. Some sections could do with improvement such as the ‘solo’ in “Big Dicks…” which is the same melody repeated 4 times, whilst it isn’t a bad solo, it could use improvement. However, for a first EP this shows a lot of promise, and is a nice change from the many manufactured identikit bands that appear to be dominating the British scene.
