Manes - Vilosophe

Not a total failure - 60%

antipath, February 6th, 2005

The previous reviewer made some good points about this record. It is obviously another example of a formerly "true" Norwegian black metal band trying to fit in with the avantguard scene. I am not really very familiar with their older material, but I have Vilosophe and admit to enjoying some of it. This is along the lines of newer Arcturus (although not nearly as good), or the lastest travesty that Ulver mislabels as music. I would say the about three of the eight songs are completely worthless, but the remaining five have some merit. Granted, most "true" metal heads wont get much out of this, but some might. It is worth hearing if you like strange stuff. I dont think this is great or genius or really creative, its just as formulaic as any second rate satan worshiping black metal.
What appeals to me about this record is that some of the songs capture a feeling of being up all night on hard drugs. The first track reminds me of a weekend long heroin or coke binge. As I said earlier, this record has many faults, but its worth a listen if you like bizare and drug induced rantings, although it is extremely pretentious and contrived. This is a perfect soundtrack for coming down from a weeklong meth binge.
