Manditory - The First Sin

Heavy metal in vein of Metallica - 73%

stickyshooZ, June 13th, 2004

Holy shit, this surprised the Hell out of me. The way I originally found out about this band was that I was searching for a mp3 of St. Anger and ended up getting "The Wanderer" by Manditory (it was labeled as a Metallica track). Until I actually did a lyrical search on Google I seriously believed that this was Metallica playing. Even Rusty's voice sounds similar to James Hetfield in his early days! It's not quite as aggressive as Metallica, but it's still very enjoyable like early Metallica was.

The lead guitar is even very similar to the sound of Kirk Hammett's - thin and spiky. It's definitely got a heavy metal vibe - it's nice and chunky, but not too chunky. There are a lot of cool melodic leads thrown into each song, similar to Metallica's song structure style. Some of the rhythm riffs are a bit repetitive and over played, but it's nothing to make you want to stab your eardrums. Some of the lyrics are kind of stupid and cheesy, but it's easy to look past that.

One thing I don't like about this singer is how in the song "The Wanderer" he'll be singing nice and steadily, then the tempo slows down and he'll start singing in a softer and slightly whiney voice. Other than that his vocals are rather good; like I said before, they are fairly similar to early James Hetfield. The band hardly has thrash characteristics, just good old American heavy metal. I'm looking forward to what this band can pump out in the future, because to tell the truth, they sound very promising for heavy metal. Check it out sometime on their site, it's well worth it.
