How To Survive A Funeral / Metal All The Time - 90%

Sargeantdeath99, June 24th, 2020
Written based on this version: 2020, CD, Rise Records

Before I get into the bands introduction as well as the actual review, I would like to start off by saying one thing. No one should be surprised that this album is great. I mainly base that opinion on the fact that Make Them Suffer is an Australian metalcore band, and lately that has been accompanied by a high amount of hype because the chances for a superb album from bands from Australia have been very high.

How To Survive A Funeral was released digitally on June 19, 2020. It will also have a physical release date three weeks later, July 10. Make Them Suffer are an Australian metalcore band from Perth. The band is currently signed to Rise Records after signing to them in January 2016. Make Them Suffers members are Sean Harmanis – lead vocals (2008–present), Nick McLernon – lead guitar, backing vocals (2008–present), Jordan Mather – drums (2017–present), Jaya Jeffery – bass (2017–present) and Booka Nile – keyboards, clean vocals (2017–present). How To Survive A Funeral also seen the band drop three singles as well as two music videos. The singles released are Erase Me(March, 20,2020), Drown With Me(April, 14, 2020) and Soul Decay(May, 20, 2020). And the music videos released are Erase Me(March, 19, 2020) and Bones(June, 18, 2020).

How To Survive A Funeral is a welcome gift to the year that has ben 2020. Make Them Suffer have managed to create one of the most unique and diverse metalcore albums of the year. This album literally contains everything a fan could want in an album, brutal lows, heart wrenching cleans, blistering guitar solos and crushing drums, as well as being accompanied by meticulously crafted lyrics to make the listener feel the as if the words on the paper were written for them. Make Them Suffer may be heading in a direction some fans dont like, they may be feeling as if the band is abandoning their sound and heaviness. However that is a lie, but Make Them Suffer have managed to blend their feminine clean vocals alongside crushing screams, which in turn creates a truly mesmerizing sound. As well as there is another hauntingly beautiful track off the album that also managed to find itself on repeat, it isn't the bands heaviest track, nor is it the bands softest track, it is one of best written tracks however off this album, that track is The Attendant. This song is lyrically and vocally perfect, it is softly sang in parts with the echo of screams in the background is remarkable.

How To Survive A Funeral does have its more traditional sounding tracks. Bones would be one of these, this track is my personal favourite from the album. Bones contains one of the best choruses I have heard in a long time, not just in metal but any genre. While that isn't the only thing the track brings to the table, Bones also manages to bring a very groovy riff to start to the track which manages to capture you right off the get go. From my point of view Bones best embodies what Make Them Suffer are all about, deep meaningful tracks. How To Survive through its screams as well as the riffs are very After The Burial influenced, and add that with the introduction of cleans mixed with female cleans are quite unique.

How To Survive A Funeral has a run time of 35:16 and I didnt find find myself skipping or getting bored at all throughout the album. Everything about this album is what fans want to see their favourite artists accomplishing, introducing fresh and new elements while keeping themselves grounded in their roots and creating heavy music. Covid has managed to fuck a lot of peoples lives up this year, but one thing is for sure, it has been a fantastic year for metal album releases, and this one joins the list, a must buy for any metal fan. If you are a fan of bands such as Parkway Drive, Polaris or After The Burial you are guaranteed to enjoy Make Them Suffer and How To Survive A Funeral.
