Lugubre - Anti-Human Black Metal

Anti-Human - 83%

DaBuddha, August 13th, 2006

I found this at a local record store and picked it up immediately. I have always been a fan of Lugubre, and so I had to get this album. Mind you it is nothing highly original or groundbreaking, but it is just a fun record to listen to when you are in this particular mindset. The song titles all speak for themselves on what this album is all about: Anti-humanity, war, hatred, death etc. Pretty much what you would expect from a record called "Anti-Human Black Metal."

The drums are furious but are more than just constant blasting, although while the blast beats are most frequent, there are enough rolls, fills and slower parts to keep it interesting. The guitars grind along with simple but catchy riffs. They are mostly tremelo picked power chords but they throw in enough subtle changes to keep it from getting monotone. The bass is, as you may have guessed, completely inaudible. The vocals are very venemous. That is the best description of the vocals I can think of. They are seething hate and are delivered in a very spiteful manner.

The songs are all between 3-5 minutes long, with the exception of the Beherit cover Down There, which is only 2:40, but nonetheless is a good recreation of a Black Metal classic. They do a fantastic job on it. Lyrical themes are everything you'd expect from the song titles and album name.

All in all this is a pretty good album. Nothing original, but as I stated before, very fun to listen to. I've always been a fan of these anti-humanity bands so this is a real treat for me. Something just draws me to this type of Black Metal, but I'm not sure why really. Anyway, pick this up if you want to have a good time listening to some well played Black Metal.
