Right from the start when the first riff of the ironically named Gently Before She Dies kicks in, the harshly textured guitars deliver a kick to the gut that isn't the least bit gentle. They seem to be exorbitantly loud and sludgy, and the texture works wonderfully for this style of music. The main riff is even quite emotional and melodic, but sludgy and filthy as all fucking hell. The vocals vary between black metalish shrieks to low doom growls. The former remind me of The Austrasian Goat to a degree, although I don't think the two projects are even remotely related. There is also a good deal of drone on here, but it isn't the kind of drone that tests your patience.
I would definitely describe the atmosphere of this album as apocalyptic and desolate. This is further reinforced by the sampled audio of a scene from The Omega Man playing in the start of Your Vice is a Locked Room. When Neville (played by Charlton Heston) is sentenced to death for heresy by a mutant cult leader in the ruins of civilization after biological warfare decimated the population, all hope really seemed lost.
This is funeral doom at its angriest and noisiest. A massive atmosphere that doesn't let up. Riffs that vary from mid-paced sludge bangers to feedback encrusted drones that fill in a landscape where everything is dead and permeated by nuclear fallout. In other words, this is really the perfect little album to listen to while binge-playing Fallout 3.
