Lolita Komplex - Le cabaret des marionnettes

Riding the wave of manga/anime fame - 35%

ChristianSteel, July 11th, 2011

Lolita KompleX is a band that is, for their appearance, highly influenced by japanese visual kei/gothic lolita bands. Their first full-lenght, "Le Cabinet Des Marionettes", offers a gothic metal style with some punk rock influences. In short, nothing original or that is worth to listen, for who is exigent. Maybe because the band itself seems a great joke or a parody, but these guys are proposed to be the idols of a typical "gothic" teenager that loves manga, Japan and the look/style of a band more than the music, being unconditionally devoted and putting up posters of them wherever in his/her gloomy bedroom.

After an intro played with synth and harpsichord to give a "goth" atmosphere, the second track of the album, "Your Misery", begins with a huge metal sound, fading in a rock-style track like The 69 Eyes, tossing "wooo-hooo" here and there to fill the gaps with riffs that recall Bullet for My Valentine. Well, this doesn't give good marks to this album, for the moment.

For the rest of the album, the tracks tend to be the same, more or less. Occasionally the female singer speaks few words in japanese, sometimes the sound seems similar to the modern gothic rock style. "Dance With Me", instead, is in every way a pop/punk rock song, the kind that go in the musical rotations on the radio. "Les Marionettes" is probably their best outcome from this tasteless production, with a symphonic begin that flows in a standard gothic metal track ... In short, the same old story. If you want to listen it on Youtube, don't watch the video. It would annihilate your desire to listen the song. Trust me.

Finally, this album will ensure a good success to the band, but in my opinion, I predict that their fanbase will be mostly made up of Japan and j-rock fangirls. A band that you can hate, or love.
