This EP is 12 minutes of outright brutal death metal. The EP tears away as a generic death metal release for most of the time, dropping off into slower passages, guitar solos and the like to make sure that it never becomes boring. Vocal variation from standard bass death metal growls to screeches and guitar solos that fit perfectly to the songs add an addition punch that makes it quite memorable. While three songs are hardly enough to make a fair judgement on a band, I have to say it is a mighty fine start and I am looking forward to hearing more from them.
Let me start of by saying that Ling Chi are extremely chaotic and the three songs on the demo sound very alike at times so i will review the disc itself and not the songs individualy.
After a brief "Happy Tree Friends" sample it blasts of with a roar. Thick solid bass, frantic guitar and insane drumming. All instruments are handled very well and the vocals, both the deep dark growl and the soar agonized wheezing, are excelent. All three songs on the demo are laced with constant tempochanges and random agonized screaming, and sometimes the songs take an allmost jazzlike turn before quickly blasting on. Occational solos and slower more structured passages thrown into the mix makes this an interesting little demo that clocks in somewhere right above 10 minutes.
If there is one thing to take away from Ulcerate Compulsorily it's that China is not as behind as most would think. That and killing with glee is a universal theme, or so the sound leads me to believe. While short, this EP does pack a decent DM punch with some interesting vocal effects. I'm not a huge DM fan but Ling Chi has place in my playlist. The standout track to me is Flesh Board because it's pure DM without the intro or outro sound effects. This EP is more than just a three track feast however. Also included are three high quality video files with covers of Cannibal Corpse and Hypocrisy performed live in China. While not the best covers ever they sound is good. The most enjoyable part however is seeing the fans moshing and having a smashing time. Ling Chi should have a very nice following in their home country.
