All the conditions, but... - 49%

Colonel Para Bellum, November 16th, 2019
Written based on this version: 2016, 7" vinyl, Cráneo Negro Records

It's true black metal and nothing more. At face value, such a response itself is already a sufficiently high grade, but when there is nothing to add besides "true black metal", it (a grade) becomes doubtful. The riffs in these two songs, well, where they can be heard, are tremendously classic: the guitar parts are composed in the vein of early Darkthrone totally. The vocals are also in the spirit of Darkthrone, although in a less degree. And according to the second song – slower and even more "darkthronish" than the first one – it may be said that the vocals are unnecessarily "clamorous", and this somewhat harms the atmosphere of the whole work.

I must say that a scrumptious oppressive atmosphere could be created on this single, there are all the conditions for this. However, all the efforts of the band were ruined by a terrible mixing (although the recording itself is good). Maybe there was an attempt to make some unique mixing, to create an inimitable sound, but the eventual result leaves a woeful impression.

For some reason, the bass is brought (even sticked out) to the forefront, as if it's some kind of punk. Moreover, sometimes it's "grunting", you know, almost grindcore-like. The sound of kick drums is some row of thumps, and very loud in addition. Such sound completely off the topic, that is, not good for the atmosphere and for the listening in general. As a result, the guitar part cannot always be understood, and, most importantly, again and again, there is no atmosphere on this single.

Right, the recording is raw, but excessive rawness is not a panacea for black metal at all. And don't forget about the complete lack of originality. If there was something interesting here, I suppose I could turn a blind eye to the bad sound. I hear nothing to praise in this work, except maybe for the "epic" ending of the second song. But true black metal is ok.
