Kråke are a very young band and this would be their first release; actually it is not. Their 'Demo 2008' is generally only available to labels, but I was able to grab a copy anyway. Along with the Black War promo of Artep, this release is the second one to enter my collection lately that has a symphonic touch without to overdo it in some respect; both play bands black metal, just in case someone was wondering.
Three songs are on the 'Demo 2008' release and they offer to the listener well crafted music, very catchy melodies, nice variations in tempo and motives and a good production. Keyboards play an important role in the concept of Kråke and except for the opening of 'Beneath the Black Waters' the band has been able to give them a role that fits to the music and they are generally balanced with the guitars and vocals.
The music has some resemblance to the later Dimmu Borgir releases, riffs and song-structure, but does not have the 'cheesiness' and is more metal in style. Also are the vocals well performed and the croaking works fine with the songs. Generally is a drum-computer not the best choice when it comes to record music, but in terms of this demo, this aspect does not have negative impact on the final product.
If 'I Ly Av Lyset' foreshadows the path the band wants to go on their forthcoming releases, then a lot can be expected from them. Bathory, black metal and classic rock elements have been brought into a unity and the outcome is an absolutely fascinating and a highly atmospheric track. It easily creates the impression of flying over the landscapes of Norway and admiring its beauty.
