Kerberos - Rough Tape 2001

I've heard it before, better. - 67%

The_Beyond, March 17th, 2007

I found this to very repetitious. After listening to it twice, I have noticed that there is not that much to notice. The drums are very basic, rarely venturing out of a 2/4 rhythm structure. And I can not for the life of me hear a bass drum in the mix! They’re computer generated and the snare is a bit annoying tonally. The guitar is recorded fine, but nothing strikes me as too original, especially the part that structurally and musically screams Emperor's "Into the Vast Great Forest". Riffs are usually short and shifty with no large melodic disposition. Vocals are a standard BM deal and do have not enough individuality to pull the listener in, and also not enough highlights to do so. The bass is in there somewhere, I just know it.

I hear a heavy influence from some other bands that I can pin-point here and there. All-in-all, it makes me reminisce about Von, so I suppose that is why I am not so harsh on this review. Even though most things (including Rough tape 2001) are 'worlds' more technical than anything Von ever produced, the fact is that the Satanic Blood demo was original, hypnotizing in riffs, vocals and drums, Where as Kerberos is not in my opinion. Their cover of ‘Christ Fire’ at the end just makes me want to put on Von after the tape has finished.
