Symphonic black metal is one of those "love it or hate it" kind of things, at least for most people. Personally, as a fan of black metal as a whole, I think it can be really enjoyable when it's done right.
"Hunger of Elements" by Kataxu is one of my favourite symphonic black metal releases, a real "summa" of everything cool within this particular subgenre - majestic atmospheres, long yet well thought compositions, mystical aesthetics, ambitious arrangements and precise execution, paired by characteristic production values, emphasizing the orchestrations (synths and keyboards) over the (still discernible in this case) guitars.
The guitar work is remarkable, and flows really well with the keyboards. The vocals are excellent, ranging from ferocious screams to the occasional growled register. The songs feel as if part of a concept, each one has its own distinct identity, yet it sounds even better as part of the whole. The actual black metal tracks are the longer ones, and they manage never to bore the listener, despite being over ten minutes long, thanks to the masterful use of crescendos and the everchanging, varied riffing. The dungeon synth interludes between the actual songs don't feel unnecessary, and allow the listener to prepare for the music to come. A final mention goes to the interesting and somewhat mysterious lyrics.
All in all, I think Kataxu have crafted something really unique here. "Hunger of Elements" is epic, thoughtful, well composed and pleasing to listen to. It feels esotheric and archaic, and I can recommend it to anyone who likes Emperor and Limbonic Art, or simply to those who want to have a real blast.
