Karras is a relatively new death metal band, hailing from the southern and frigid lands of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Entre las sombras is their debut EP, their only studio production, apart from a full length entitled Precisión quirúrgica, and the only release I’ve got by them; their full length is proving quite difficult to find.
There is not much to say about this EP, really. Entre las sombras features a rather simple and unidimensional approach to death metal, taking heavy influence from the sound of modern day Cannibal Corpse, especially the more mid-tempo numbers like Pit of Zombies, Decency Defied or Evisceration Plague. You get downtuned, groovy guitar riffs with extensive use of double bass drumming, which are interspersed with faster sections. It’s not on the same level of heaviness and brutality that CC is known for, but they get the job done. I’ve got no problem with this style, but a full length in this same vein would get tiring really fast for me. The music is unadventurous and once you’ve heard the first song, you’ve heard it all. The riffs are average, there are no solos or any other kind of changes or breaks in the songwriting to keep things interesting. Fortunately, at 13 minutes, Entre las sombras manages to get the point across and doesn’t overstay its welcome.
I really hope they stepped their game up a bit for their full length, their formula is not exactly gripping. The band sounds tight and all but I can see a full length in this fashion struggling to hold the attention of people accustomed to more adventurous and engaging songwriting. This is good, if dangerously average, death metal.
