Jupiterian - Drag Me to My Grave

Marching to the grave - 60%

Zodijackyl, June 6th, 2017

While the band's debut EP felt a bit like being dragged to the grave, this one has a much better feeling, largely due to the eerie, haunting melodies which are layered over parts of the song. Still dirty and drawling, basking in downtuned distortion and deep growls, this one invokes a bit more than the sludgy grime of the debut. It's a bit riffier, getting into doom/death territory more than the dirty droning of that first EP. While the pace is still torturous and slow, it feels like it has been picked up quite a bit, and some excessive length trimmed off the song. More like an actual song, with some dynamics which enhance the gloomy funeral procession - more formal, rather than just a symbolic march to the grave. There is also an alternate "My Dying Bride" version which seems to just have some violins added in. It's actually a nice touch, a bit more of a dramatic dynamic to complement the doom/death styling. while it's a subtle change, it does highlight how the band is better when working with some elements other than droning and grit.

Overall, an enjoyable song but nothing special.
