Jackdevil - Unholy Sacrifice

Nostalgic Thrash/Speed Metal - 90%

Opus_Oculto, May 4th, 2014

One of the greatest and most famous aspects of the Brazilian heavy metal scene has always been undoubtedly thrash metal. From the glorious time of Sepultura in the 80s, through Dorsal Atlântica, Korzus, Torture Squad and legendary Sarcófago, thrash has always been present among the top names in brazilian metal. Armed with this vast history, Jackdevil appears in the distant São Luís presenting a thrash metal (mixed with a bit of speed metal) that, while not innovative, fulfills perfectly its role as a nostalgic representative of this style.

Unholy Sacrifice is a quite diverse set of ten songs that don’t leave the rate fall at some point, distilling one decent old school thrash metal from start to finish. The quality of the compositions impresses mainly by masterfully executed riffs that give speed and aggressiveness to each of the tracks. For example, the main riff of Vixen of Satan reminds other classic riffs like Postmortem or From Whom the Bell Tolls. The solos follow the standard in high speed and the only time you can breathe is during the instrumental track The Coven (a bass solo). The vocals adopt a very own style, most of the time screaming, and growling in some stretches. And one of the things that most caught my attention to this album: like a good thrash/speed metal, the bass guitar is extremely audible and guides the melodies during the whole album.

During the thirty minutes of Unholy Sacrifice, the listener is led into a real journey to the early years of thrash metal, and at no time has the feeling that the album is repetitive or has reached its climax. Undoubtedly an album recommended for nostalgic fans of the glory years of Kill ' Em All, Bounded by Blood, Hell Awaits, Pleasure to Kill and others.
