Infierno 99 - Fuera del circulo

Not stellar nor groundbreaking, but... - 80%

The appearance of Infierno 99’s debut EP struck me right away (it somewhat reminded me of Theatre of Tragedy’s style of artwork). I figured if a band chooses a classy cover like that for their release, that usually means they have some great musical taste too. However, this kind of irrational thinking has made me listen to some abysmal music I otherwise wouldn’t have touched with a ten foot pole in the past. This time however, my sixth sense was spot on. This is good stuff!

The EP starts out with some keyboard tunes and I was expecting a lengthy intro, but after a few seconds the guitar kicks in already with a powerful riff. All songs are mid-paced, but have a nice rockin’ groove to them. The band focuses on the guitar, bass, drum and vocals, except for the first few seconds of the EP, there are no frills to be found here.

All the lyrics are in Spanish, so I have no clue what the songs are about, but I can tell you, this girl can sing. She has a powerful somewhat deep voice.

The production great for an independent release. All instruments are clearly audible and the volume of the vocals is spot on in comparison with the instrumentation.

An enjoyable little EP, which is no way stellar or groundbreaking, but just a good slab of unpretentious music.
