Despite its goregrind moniker and its cryptic title, Infected Intestines do offer us a great slice of underground death metal just the way we like it!
"The Disguise" has somewhat of an uncommon title. The song starts with some haunting and dreamy arpeggios that set the scene for some delusional spoken vocals. We do follow for a while this guy that has some strangely disturbing feelings inside. He seems to calmly accept them and slowly begins to depart to the dark side. Suicidal thoughts are expressed just before the music bursting out in an edgy death metal from hell. Nice track! Production is decent and pretty well fitted for an underground demo. The guitars are thin and salty distorted, fed with big muffs and fuzz. The other songs are crafted with imaginative and saturated riffs. The bass do punctuate the mix occasionally but it is not audible all the time. The way the drums are mixed is very interesting to me as they do put forward the double kick bass drum which has a compact analog flavoured sound. The snare is dry and powerful and the blasting moments are all the way delightful. Headbanging is guaranteed on this little monster.
Two vocalists are credited on this release although one could easily do the job alone. By no means is it a kind of grindcore setting with a low grunted vocals and some higher screamy shrieks. It is the regular and all-time appreciated death growl. On the last song "Journey Through Reality" it is featured with some kind of chorus effect on it. Quite surprising.
It is a chance nowadays to check out a demo cassette like this. Like a frozen mammoth in the permafrost of time, this Finnish demo shows what death metal was meant to be in its true and evil essence. Recommended listening.
