Impaled Nazarene - Impaled Nazarene vs. Driller Killer

Driller Killer Steals the Show - 75%

gang_of_four, July 14th, 2006

Half of this album is good; infact, the half of this album that is good is damn good. I give this split a rating of 75% because the material that is on here is good and it is serves and a good introduction to two bands.

The good half of this album is the Driller Killer material; meaning their original "How Come?" and Impaled Nazarene's cover of Driller Killer's "I Couldn't Care Less". These songs are full of the energy and spirit that come from the punk roots of metal; the musicians put emotion above precision playing, and the result is a sensation of intensity and speed that is hard to match.

Impaled Nazarene's songs (meaning, sadly, fall prey to the same faults as their other post-Rapture material; they sound uninspired, formulaic, and despite Impaled Nazarene's obvious desire to create a sensation of speed they fail miserably as all the songs come off as far slower than they should be.

When it comes to "Ghettoblaster" I wouldn't lay the fault at the feet of Driller Killer; the original Impaled Nazarene version was boring to the point that i can't imagine them making the song interesting without a serious re-writing of the song. "Impotent Mankind" suffers from the same faults all post-Rapture Impaled Nazarene does.

However, this split is not completely worthless when it comes to Impaled Nazarene because Impaled Nazarene's cover of "I Couldn't Careless" could show to new fans how good the band used to be. The fact that this release also introduces listeners to Driller Killer makes this valuable as well.
