Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno 2011

Stu Block's Debut - 89%

Sraiken, September 16th, 2011

As many know, this song was originally recorded on the album "Burnt Offerings" by longtime vocalist Matt Barlow. He has since retired from music for the second time to become a police officer.

This version is a re-recorded version featuring new vocalist Stu Block. He is famous for being the current vocalist in the Canadian band Into Eternity, well known for his death growls and high-pitched banshee wails.
None of those are truly featured on this song.

What we find is that Stu essentially does his best Matt Barlow impression. This in and of itself is not a bad thing at all. However, it does leave one to wonder what he is going to sound like on "Dystopia". I'm personally hoping that Stu takes the original stuff that he is going to sing for the upcoming album and owns it in his own way just like he owns Into Eternity.

As far as the song itself goes, what more needs to be said? It's "Dante's Inferno", Iced Earth's epic track. The production on this re-recording is fantastic. Everything is mixed well, and you can hear everything.

I only gave this an 89 because of the fact that outside of Stu's vocals and the production, the song isn't much different from the original.
