To start off, I want to warn you. This album is not for those of you who hope to find speed or something to cheer you up and enlighten the room. This album is literal DARKNESS and pain. The case with bands like Horse Latitudes is - you either like, or hate them. You either "get" the music or you either don't. If you like slow, heavy music with real and deep emotions than this might prove to be for you.
This is one of the band names that perfectly fits the band. For those who don't know, Horse Latitudes or Subtropical High are subtropical latitudes between 30 and 35 degrees both north and south. This is a still and empty region. For example, the Sahara Desert in Africa. I tell you this just to try to prepare you for the sound of the album.
The main tool the Finnish band uses is distortion and BASS. You can hear the bass in every second and to be honest, it is way more audible than anything else and is used more than the vocals. The bass NAILS. Most of the songs sound if someone is hammering the nails on your coffin.
Probably the most important thing I have to point out is the average speed of the record - like a hot steel spilling REALLY SLOWLY on your knees. The vocals are emotional, in the best of senses and you kind of get the feeling that the guy is being tortured in one of the deepest holes of hell. The album's length is 47 minutes and I think it's how it should be, 47 are enough to enclose you in the hole and smash you.
To conclude, many black and death metal bands can be jelous of Horse Latitudes for the amount of BLACKENED feeling that this record manages to put out.
