Holy Death - Creeping Death

Creeping death/rushing doom - 70%

gasmask_colostomy, December 2nd, 2021

Want to hear a metal joke? Of course you do. What if a band took Metallica's 'Creeping Death' at its title's face value and made it into a song of creeping death metal? Well, that's nearly what happens with Holy Death's cover, but in fact that warping extreme doom slowness of the distorted intro and the new spoken-word quote that the trio have added conceal a mostly straight run-through of the main parts of the song. Of course, these guys have kept their amp settings turned to "sludge" and Torie John hasn't adapted his bear-like roar either, so the slamming thrash riffing hits pretty hard, if a lot less cleanly than the original. I almost didn't expect for the solo to get a proper look in here, but Holy Death dutifully play it and only further deviate by adding an instinctive "Motherfucker" to the breakdown part of "Die by my hand". It must be said that the groove prior to that sounds massive with the instrumental power here, although surely this was conceived as a bit of fun one day at the studio and not meant to be taken that seriously. Whatever the case, Holy Death's 'Creeping Death' is a lot of fun to listen to.
