Holocausto - Tozago as Deismno

not metal, not bad (if you like this stuff) - 80%

ICE_CUBE, January 30th, 2012

I was a little shocked on first listen as the only Holocausto I’d ever heard before this was Campo de Exterminio, which this album sounds absolutely nothing like. Honestly, I would not really consider Tozago as Deismno to be a metal album at all, so If you're expecting Brazilian style death/thrash/black prepare to be disappointed; there are no blast beats, tremolo picking or death growls. Still, this is a decent album if you like the style of music it contains.
A good part of Tozago as Deismno is ambient passages comprised of noises, mutitracked voices and non idiomatic type jamming – i.e. atonal guitar, keyboards, crashing cymbals. The last three songs are are all improvised tracks like this with sampled loops, piano, even upright bass. See? NOT METAL!
The guitars on Tozago as Deismno are sometimes clean, sometimes distorted/chorus/phased, but usually not as prevalent as the bass which mostly helps back the tom-heavy, mechanical drum beats that take precedence when the songs kick into full gear. The vocals usually alternate between an almost half spoken/monotone dictation and a more aggressive yell/scream.
This album could be described as dark, industrial, experimental rock but that doesn't describe it very well. I would compare the music on Tozago as Deismno to artists like Swans or Steve Albini’s projects. While it can get a little boring at times it has an aggressiveness that is undeniable, but completely removed from the realm of what these guys are known for. So I will repeat myself once more. This is by no means a bad album, but it has nothing to do with metal. I love it and have listened to it many times over the years, but you have to approach these recordings for what they are and you also have be a fan of this type of music in the first place.
