Although most people know this album, many of them get the wrong idea, and the purpose of this review is to clear a few heads. First and foremost, you can listen to this album, not be a Nazi and still find good things in it. I myself am not a Nazi, and I love this album. Second of all, although it has influenced mostly black metal bands, this is more closely akin to the South American metal sound.
This album is black metal of the first wave, comparable to early Sodom, Bathory, Hellhammer, etc, but with a sound like Vulcano, Sarcofago, or even Mortuorio. I love this sound, and I think it is one of the best manifestations of thrashy sounding extreme music out there. The recording quality is crappy, but the grime adds to this music instead of taking away from it. And grime there is plenty. The recording is basically dungeon death metal style, so not too crappy, but still demo recording, but with everything audible, even if some things, like the very high registers on this album, are distorted or blurred at times. The vocals are typical of South American thrash, but with a black metal edge, raspy and all, but still thrashed out, no shrieking, mostly just funny evil speech. The guitar riffs are one of a kind, there has never been riffing like this and from the looks of things it will never be repeated either. You really just have to hear the riffs and the grim and evil pouring out form them, and you will know why I said these words. The drumming is spastic, sometimes a little bit off, but keeps time fairly well for the most part. He uses double time and blast beats a lot, but he likes to get down on the toms as well form time to time. The music is really simple and savage, the sound they were going for, and in that respect, this album is a complete success. It is savage in its fast parts, makes you head bang to its slow parts, and there are very few mid-tempo riffs, although the ones that are on here are pure fucking adrenaline.
As for the Nazism, first of all, why does no one ever think about the fact that these people are from Brazil? Sure, there are Nazis in South America, and even some in Brazil, but these kids are not white. Clearly this is a stage prop. And since so many people would contest this, then why did they change their outlook so suddenly? It is because their outlook did not change, this was just a theme they borrowed from their country mates, and yet you never hear Sepultura getting ragged on for being Nazis. On the other hand, if they truly are Nazis, who gives a fuck? You do not have to hold the political views of your favorite bands, unless of course there is nothing else going for the band, like with NSBM or shitty punk rock, then you listen to it for the politics. But thrash metal? Come on give me a fucking break people, this music has a lot more to focus on, and as such, it is unimportant what these people think. This is music and not politics first and foremost, this is a piece of black/thrash, and is not supposed to be interpreted as propaganda. Many Nazi bands are, and that is why I still listen to this, because it is good in spite of it being ‘Nazi’. So you should get this, even if you are not a Nazi.
